The world is a chaotic place. More than 7 billion people share the globe, but different political systems, economies, and beliefs provide varying levels of prosperity. A new gauge seeks to sort through the differences and find which countries experience the highest amount of comfort.

Global well-being improvement leader Healthways and world-leading management consulting firm Gallup have launched the Global Well-Being index, which provides insight on how citizens around the world self-report the state of their lives and future well-being. More than 133,000 interviews across 135 countries contributed to the index.

The five prominent elements of well-being used in the index are listed below.

  1. Purpose: Liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals
  2. Social: Having supportive relationships and love in your life
  3. Financial: Managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security
  4. Community: Liking where you live, feeling safe, and having pride in your community
  5. Physical: Having good health and enough energy to get things done daily

Globally, only 17 percent of the world’s population is flourishing in at least three of the five elements. The Americas have the highest well-being, but the United States failed to break the top ten, ranking twelfth in global well-being. On the other end of the spectrum, Syria, Afghanistan, and Haiti have the lowest well-being readings.

Let’s take a look at the ten countries with the highest overall well-being in the world, as assessed by the percentage of their populations indicating that they are thriving in three or more of the five elements.
