Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding is almost here. Markle has gone through an incredible transformation ever since she began her relationship with Prince Harry. In fact, she’s changed so much, some people are upset about it. One behavior in particular has drawn attention — and not all of the attention is positive.

Life before Prince Harry

Before Markle became famous, she made ends meet by working as a wedding calligrapher. She also worked on the game show Deal or No Deal as one of their suitcase models. Markle told Esquire in a 2013  interview she chose calligraphy instead of waitressing.

I’ve always had a propensity for getting the cursive down pretty well. What it evolved into was my pseudo-waitressing job when I was auditioning. I didn’t wait tables. I did calligraphy for the invitations for, like, Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s wedding … I would sit there with a little white tube sock on my hand, so no hand oils got on the card, trying to pay my bills while auditioning.

Although Markle had a string of odd jobs, she told Esquire she thought carefully about the types of jobs she chose. One of the reasons she chose calligraphy was because it was a skill few people have, so she knew it would be easy to find work.

Said Markle, “Oh, it’s super-lucrative. Because there are so few people doing it. What’s funny is I probably still have some calligraphy business cards floating out in the world, and I can’t wait for someone to call me in a month or something, and say, ‘Can you do these for my son’s Bar Mitzvah?’ joked Markle in her Esquire interview.
