3 Chip Stocks to Note Now: Nvidia’s CUDA 6, Intel’s Holiday Stores, Qualcomm’s Medical Prize
NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA): Today, Nvidia announced CUDA 6, which will allow programmers to off-load tasks from a CPU to a GPU, thus improving performance of the system as a whole. CUDA 6 offers unified memory, a feature that makes it easier for the CPU and GPU to share the memory load, and represents Nvidia’s latest effort to make its processors more friendly to users and programmers alike.
Intel (NASDAQ:INTC): Intel will be setting up a series of mini-stores sporting Intel products, designed to bolster the company’s sales numbers during the holidays. Though Intel does not have a large network of regular stores, as opposed to Apple, the company does plan on trying to up its sales numbers by going directly to the consumer over the holiday season. The first store is scheduled to open by the end of the month.
Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM): Qualcomm is financing part of the $10 million Tricorder X prize. Named after the famous device from the Star Trek universe that could diagnose diseases and sense matter in a manner of seconds, a qualifying device has to be able to recognize fifteen different diseases virtually without delay. A Qualcomm executive has said that the project reflects the company’s belief that the traditional medical device may become obsolete by the end of the decade.
