Police in Spain arrested the former JP Morgan Chase trader Javier Martin-Artajo on Tuesday while he prepares to resist possible extradition to the United States due to a $6.2-billion financial scandal at the country’s biggest bank.
The arrest occurred after the United States charged Martin-Artajo along with a junior colleague, Julien Grout, with wire fraud and conspiracy to falsify books and records linked with the trading losses, which were carried out by Bruno Iksil. The latter, who was nicknamed the “London Whale” for his big bets on derivatives markets, is cooperating with American prosecutors and has not thus far been charged.
