3M announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Ceradyne Inc., has been awarded an $80 million delivery order with the U.S. government through which to supply 77,000 enhanced combat helmets and associated parts to the Marine Corps. This contract arises from the joint procurement program led by the Marine Corps and the U.S. Army to enhance head protection for Marines and soldiers.

According to Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell PLC (NYSE:RDSA) (NYSE:RDSB) and other energy majors operating in South Africa say that country’s proposed changes to mineral and energy statutes lack clarity and would put off investment in Africa’s biggest economy. Modifications to the 2002 Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, being examined now by the South African Parliament, would allow the government an unspecified free stake in all new oil and gas ventures, along with the right to appoint two directors to their boards. South Africa wants to develop its oil resources to reinforce and diversify its economy, which currently has an unemployment rate of 25.6 percent.

AT&T announced Wednesday that it finalized its purchase of wireless spectrum in the lower 700 MHz band B block from Verizon Wireless. The licenses cover 42 million people in 18 states. The spectrum will support the telecom giant’s deployment of 4G LTE to address soaring demand for mobile Internet services. The company claims to have the country’s fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network.
