4 Consumer Stock Stories for Savvy Investment Shopping

Best Buy Co. (NYSE:BBY): Closing price $31.39

You have to feel for the headquarter-based employees of Best Buy on Tuesdays as recurring layoffs have earned that day the moniker of “Tornado Tuesdays” or “Termination Tuesdays,” according to the Star Tribune. The electronics retailer has been cutting its payroll in recent months to reduce costs, but the manner in which it is doing it caused an attorney to say it is similar to slowly pulling off a bandage. Employees maintain that such a strategy has of course been bad for morale, but might allow the company to avert federal laws requiring mass-layoff reporting.

Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE:YUM): Closing price $74.00

After the new breakfast product sold well in its maiden Southern California run, Taco Bell is testing its popular waffle tacos in new locations beginning this week. The novel creation sports eggs and sausage folded up in a waffle, becoming the top-selling morning menu item at the five Taco Bell restaurants where it launched thus far in 2013. Starting Thursday, the dish will expand to 100 eateries in Fresno, Omaha, and Chattanooga, marking the extension first reported by the Associated Press. Taco Bell said that other breakfast menu items being tested in the 100 stores include fruit-topped yogurt and the AM Crunchwrap. Chile-head observers might well wonder where the hot peppers are in the waffle tacos.
