Knowledgeable sources have told Reuters that the Justice Department is taking depositions as part of an inquiry into a proposed merger of American Airlines and US Airways Group that would form the biggest airline on the planet. One source said that a potential impasse in discussions between the Department and the carriers is whether the airlines will agree to sell slots, take off and landing rights, and to reduce their dominance at Reagan National Airport.

General Electric Company (NYSE:GE): Current price $23.30

GE wants to divest its CareCredit healthcare financing division, which is a unit within its huge GE Capital financial arm, in a potential transaction that might be valued at roughly $2 billion, according to inside sources to Reuters on Friday. The company has hired Goldman Sachs Group to manage the sale process, and has enticed buyout interest from some banks, along with at least one nonbank financial services firm, said the four sources, who want to remain anonymous.

Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE:S): Current price $7.84

Inside sources say that American regulators do not intend to request either Sprint or Clearwire Corp to divest any spectrum as they close in on a vote on Sprint’s proposed takeover of Clearwire. The Federal Communications Commission is looking at Sprint’s proposed buyout of the shares that it does not already own in Clearwire in the same review process as the $21.6-billion offer from SoftBank Corp to acquire 78 percent of Sprint. On Thursday, the FCC indicated that it was nearing a call on the deals, as acting Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn revealed that she has circulated a draft order recommending the approval of the deals to the FCC’s other two commissioners.

Westport Innovations (NASDAQ:WPRT): Current price $33.40

On Friday, Westport announced that it has purchased BAF Technologies and its subsidiary, ServoTech Engineering, subsidiaries of Clean Energy Fuels Corp., for $25 million in Westport stock. Additionally, Westport and Clean Energy announced a $5-million joint marketing and sales program.
