Some two months after debuting hashtags, Facebook is looking for new ways with which to make them useful. The firm has commenced testing a “trending” topics section in the homepage news feed of its website. The section highlights topics like hashtags, which are presently popular on the site. On Friday, a Facebook spokeswoman confirmed the test, explaining that, “We are running a small test of a unit on News Feed. Right now it only available to a small percentage of US users and it is still in the early stages of development.”

Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV (NYSE:PHG): Closing price $30.82

On Friday, Philips announced the intro of EPIQ ultrasound system, providing an entirely new level of clinical confidence with a first-of-its-kind ultrasound architecture, which is a totally new approach to developing ultrasound images without compromise. The system debuted at the European Society of Cardiology 2013 Congress in Amsterdam, and sports a new imaging tech called nSIGHT, that when joined with Philips’ Anatomical Intelligence technology, provides a powerful combination of speed and image clarity.

Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC): Closing price $21.98

It is anticipated that Intel will announce a new lineup of Haswell processors on September 1. The firm will introduce 13 processors for desktops, including the high-end Core i7-4771, mid-range i5-4440, i3-434, and entry-level Pentium G3430. While for notebooks, the company will release 24 models including Core i7-4610Y, i5-4300Y, Pentium 3560Y, and Celeron 2955U, say sources from the upstream supply chain. Together with Haswell-based processors, Intel will release four Ivy Bridge-based processors, including the Core i5-3340.

On Friday, Splunk was upgraded at FBR Capital from Market Perform to Outperform along with a price target of $61, up from $48, following the firm’s impressive results/guidance and improved confidence in the business. An analyst observed that, “We believe the company’s strong product cycle, healthy secular trends, and a ramping sales force will translate into larger deal sizes (enterprise adoption agreements) over the coming years.”
