The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS): Closing price $61.13

ESPN sports network President John Skipper said Wednesday at press briefing that his company has held preliminary discussions to offer programming on a Web-based TV service such as those proposed by Google, Sony Corp., and Intel Corp. An Internet TV service would be required to pay as much or more than cable and satellite TV providers, according to Skipper, who declined to specify the firms with which ESPN has spoken.

The executive went on to say that  a Web-based service would have to purchase “the whole suite of products. We’re not going to offer one-offs.” Access to ESPN would afford new online television providers instant credibility and a foothold from which  to compete with established players such as Comcast Corp. and DIRECTV.
