5 Dollar Store Items That Are a Waste of Money
When hunting for deals, the first place you might think of is the dollar store. Stores like Dollar General and Dollar Tree can be great places to find items at deeply discounted prices. However, some dollar store items aren’t worth your money. Here are a few dollar store purchases that are a waste of money.
When it comes to purchasing kitchen supplies, such as knives, you want to be careful. Quality is important because a dull knife could lead to a serious accident. A cheap dollar-store knife is unlikely to cut your food well. One user on Reddit’s cooking forum posted about her terrible experience with a knife she purchased from Dollar Tree:
I found myself at Dollar Tree. While looking over the cookware, I spotted a chef’s knife. Out of curiosity, I bought it, took it home, and started to cook with it. Now, this is the part where you’re expecting me to say, “… and it actually turned out to be a surprisingly decent knife.” No. It wasn’t. The first thing I used it for was to cut up a whole chicken… I tried to cut up an onion, and it was barely adequate, clearly giving signs that it was moving past its skill level. I guess cutting up a chicken took a lot out of its edge.
Each time [the knife] got worse and worse, until last night, when—seriously—a plastic picnic knife would have done a better job. So, the moral here is you get what you pay for.
2. Toilet paper
When it comes to toilet paper, you’ll want to pass the dollar store on by. The discount brands tend to be lower quality, and you’ll end up using twice as much. If you opt for a name-brand bathroom tissue, you’re likely to get a smaller size and a roll with fewer sheets. Consequently, purchasing a pack of toilet paper from the dollar store isn’t much of a deal. You’re better off buying toilet paper in bulk at a warehouse club.
If you’re gearing up for your next home renovation project, don’t get your tools from the dollar store. Dollar store tools aren’t very sturdy. This could put you at risk for having an accident. You’ll also end up wasting money replacing broken tools. Your best bet is to buy your tools from a hardware store or a home improvement store like Lowe’s or Home Depot.
If you have a headache, you might be tempted to head to your nearest dollar store and buy a cheap bottle of aspirin. Over-the-counter medications are inexpensive at the dollar store, but you’re better off making this purchase elsewhere. Medication at the dollar store could be expired or counterfeit. Instead, purchase over-the-counter drugs at a pharmacy or supermarket.
Do you chew a lot of gum? You’re not going to get your money’s worth at the dollar store. Gum tends to be sold in smaller packages at these stores. If gum is a product you purchase often, consider making a stop at a warehouse club and buying in bulk.
