Staying productive throughout the day can be a challenge. If you’re finding that you just can’t seem to emerge from a major productivity slump, it may be time to seek out the services of a coach to help you get back on track. A productivity coach can help you refocus your energy, identify blind spots, and assist you with progressing toward your work goals.

“For real results that you can maintain, a personal productivity coach should offer solutions tailored to fit you like a glove. Before giving advice, a good coach asks you a lot of targeted questions. In contrast, an inexperienced coach may quickly give advice that works for other clients, or suggest “band-aid” solutions that treat symptoms, not the root cause. For example, you may suffer from email overload, but until we figure out if the root cause is that you’re indecisive, or your concentration suffers due to excessive interruptions, or you don’t know your email software, or you have trouble prioritizing and managing tasks, or all the above, we can’t fix the problem in a way that will last,” said productivity coach Jan Jasper.

Here are some signs that it’s time to consult a professional.

1. You’re overwhelmed

Does it feel like you’re drowning in work, you can’t seem to keep up with important emails, and the world is caving in on you? This may be a hint that you need professional advice on how to regain control of your work life. Consistent feelings of stress and anxiety are not only exhausting but also a threat to your overall health.

2. You frequently miss deadlines

If you often request deadline extensions, that’s a clear sign you need to manage your time better. Instead of blaming others or making excuses for why you are late, take responsibility and nip the problem in the bud as soon as possible. A productivity coach may be able to help you identify some of the warning signs beforehand to help you recognize when you are not going to be able to deliver on time. Being aware of the red flags ahead of time may help you take action sooner so that you can prevent future tardiness. Also realize that part of your problem may be the fact that you overestimate how much time you have, or you could be such a people pleaser that you take on too much out of a fear of disappointing others.

3. You have no work-life balance

Are you always working straight through the weekend? Do your friends and family complain that they never see you? It’s great to be able to support yourself and make a good living, but you also need to have a healthy social life. A productivity expert could show you how to adjust your work style so there’s more room for activities outside the office.

4. You’re forgetful

You forget to return important phone calls, miss meetings, and can’t seem to find files when you need them. Forgetfulness could be another sign that you have too much on your plate. The right coach can work with you to develop an effective means of keeping track of important tasks.

5. You’re always late

Is your to-do list so long that you have difficulty making it to your appointments on time? A coach could assist you with working on your tendency to over-schedule. Life happens, so being late every now and then is understandable, but if this has become a habit it’s time to identify the cause so that you can arrive on time.
