5 Things You Should Never Do at the Office Christmas Party

It’s that time of year again, the office Christmas party. Whether you dread this annual event or look forward to it, your behavior could determine your fate at the company. One wrong move could earn you a reputation that’s hard to shake. Here are some tips for making sure you don’t embarrass yourself, ruin your chances of getting promoted, or get fired.


1. Get drunk

Sure, the holidays are a great time to kick back, relax, and have a few beers. But one thing you have to remember is that you are not surrounded by friends. You are at work with colleagues—some of whom may be vying for your job or looking for ways to make you look bad. Just because someone is nice and smiles doesn’t mean he or she has your best interests at heart. Stay sober so that you don’t end up making a fool of yourself. Also remember that you are always being watched. Some employers use the office Christmas party as a tool for evaluating who is and isn’t a good fit for the company. Remain on your best behavior at all times.

2. Aggressively flirt with your boss or co-workers

This is not the time to plan your next hook-up. If you know you get obnoxious and handsy when you’re drunk, don’t drink (or at least keep the drinks at a minimum). Paying someone a nice compliment is one thing, but getting aggressive is very different. Some co-workers may see it as no big deal, but others could be offended. When alcohol is involved, you never know what you’re going to get. The last thing you need is a sexual harassment complaint in your employee file. Behave.

3. Dress provocatively

The invitation said “dress to impress,” but that does not mean you now have a license to wear tight pants and a shirt with way too many buttons undone. You can look nice without being the lead act in your own private peep show. Cover up.

4. Pull up a seat at the buffet table

This is not your house and this is not your party, so don’t be greedy. If you‘re particularly hungry that day, make sure you have a big lunch. And if you’re still hungry after lunch, have a snack before the party. The point of an office Christmas party is not to load up on drinks and food. This is a time to get to know some of your co-workers better and strengthen connections with your managers. While it’s nice that there is free food, you should refrain from unbuttoning the top button of your pants and then proceeding to gorge yourself.

5. Gossip

Yes, all of the co-workers you dislike are in the same room at the same time. While it may be tempting to talk about them, don’t do it. You could be gossiping about the accountant’s niece or a good friend of a co-worker in another department. Just smile through the pain.
