Alcatel-Lucent Collaborates with Qualcomm on Small Cells and 2 Other Hot Stocks to Watch

On Tuesday, Alcatel and Qualcomm Technologies Inc. said they would work jointly to develop small cell base stations that enhance 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi networks so as to improve wireless connectivity in residential and enterprise environments. These next-generation small cells would unite Alcatel-Lucent’s expertise and innovation in the development of small cell solutions with Qualcomm Technologies’s mobile and networking technologies to enable ultra-broadband wireless communications.


Health Management Associates Inc. (NYSE:HMA) Current price $13.31

Community Health Systems Inc. announced Tuesday that it will acquire the smaller Health Management Associates at a price of $3.9 billion in order to increase its base during the overhaul of the health care system. Both firms’ hospitals are located mostly in smaller cities and rural areas, and Health Management has a strong footprint in the Southeast, including Florida.


Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (NYSE:POT): Current price $30.14

Shares of Potash Corp. were down more than 20 percent in late morning trading as fertilizer stocks crashed early Tuesday on fears that actions by the world’s biggest potash producer will drive down prices. OAO Uralkali CEO Vladislav Baumgertner announced Tuesday that his company, the largest potash producer on the planet, is breaking up a sales venture with Belarus that had controlled 43 percent of world exports, and large potash producers are taking the blow in their shares. Mosaic (NYSE:MOS) tumbled 24 percent, worse than Potash Corp.
