All Isn’t Merry and Bright at the Holiday Box Office

Movie exhibitors such as Regal Entertainment (NYSE:RGC), Carmike Cinemas (NASDAQ:CKEC) and Cinemark Holdings (NYSE:CNK) took a hit Monday in apparent reaction to weak holiday box office results. This past weekend was the third subpar weekend in a row with ticket sales down 14% from last year. The past several weeks have been some of the lowest grossing weeks of the year for the movie industry according to BBC News.

Hollywood has failed to release any blockbuster hits so far this holiday season despite the star-studded cast of “New Year’s Eve”, which opened on December 11.  “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” and the family film “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” opened this past weekend, but also brought in disappointing results.

BBC News quoted Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian who said, “It’s unbelievable how bad it is.”  Box office results are down 4% year to date and analysts have been worried about the industry since Thanksgiving.  On December 8Caris and Co. downgraded Carmike stock to a “below average” rating signaling concern. The only ray of light in the industry has been IMAX (NASDAQ:IMAX), who is up 12% since Thanksgiving despite being lumped in with the other movie exhibitors.
