Results: Net income for Amerco rose to $80.6 million ($4.13 per share) vs. $78.2 million ($3.56 per share) in the same quarter a year earlier. This marks a rise of 3% from the year-earlier quarter.

Actual vs. Wall St. Expectations: Amerco reported adjusted net income of $4.33 per share. By that measure, the company beat the mean estimate of $4.14 per share. It beat the average revenue estimate of $503.5 million.

Quoting Management: “Moving and storage revenues finished the quarter on a strong note,” stated Joe Shoen, chairman of AMERCO. “The self-move and self-storage industries remain extremely competitive. We continue to manage with an eye toward the future.”

The company has now topped analyst estimates for the last four quarters. It beat the mark by 91 cents in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year, by 34 cents in the third quarter of the last fiscal year, and by 67 cents in the second quarter of the last fiscal year.

Revenue has risen the past four quarters. Revenue increased 7.2% to $523.4 million in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The figure rose 19.5% in the third quarter of the last fiscal year from the year earlier and climbed 10.4% in the second quarter of the last fiscal year from the year-ago quarter.

Net income has increased 7% year-over-year on average across the last five quarters. The biggest gain came in the fourth of the last fiscal year, when income climbed 91.8% from the year-earlier quarter.

Looking Forward: For next quarter, analysts have a more positive outlook about the company’s expected results. The average estimate for the second quarter is $5.61 per share, up from $5.39 ninety days ago. For the fiscal year, the average estimate has moved up from $12.13 a share to $12.72 over the last ninety days.
