American Eagle Soars in 3Q

American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE:AEO), retailer of apparel for teenagers, reported a robust improvement in its results for the third quarter.

Earnings were $52.4 million (27 cents a share) as against $33.02 million (17 cents a share) last year. The earnings were in line with analysts’ expectations. Sales were $832 million, up by 11%. The bright spark – global online sales, which rose by 21% this quarter, comparing extremely favorably with the 2% decrease last year in the same quarter.

The company projects Q4 earning per share at 40–44 cents against an estimate of 39 cents. This would probably be driven by the strong sales trend noticed over the Thanksgiving weekend, expected to maintain its momentum during the rest of the holiday quarter and compensate for higher raw material costs and holiday discounting.

Levi Strauss Executive Robert Hanson was named CEO of American Eagle Outfitters earlier this month.
