AOL Partners With Discovery Communications and 4 Media Titans Making Waves

AOL, Inc. announced a strategic partnership with Discovery Communications (NASDAQ:DISCA). The partnership will bring short-form videos from Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science Channel, Military Channel to The AOL On Network’s library of more than 470,000 premium videos. Content from Discovery’s award-winning networks will be programmed into The AOL On Network’s 14 channels and shared across the AOL On video hub.

Coinstar Inc., which is the parent company to Redbox, is planning on distributing coffee vending machines that feature Seattle’s Best Coffee, a brand that was recently purchased by Starbucks and is considered a lesser quality, “working class” coffee. According to a recent article in Adweek, Seattle’s Best faces challenges from low-price competitors McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts.

How badly did Time Warner Cable want to take the TV rights for the Los Angeles Dodgers away from Fox Sports’ Prime Ticket channel? So bad that the cable operator promised the team that they will cover fees from other distributors who don’t sign on to carry the channel. The agreement is expected to be announced this week, perhaps later Thursday. In other words, if DirecTV, for example, does not sign on to carry the new Dodgers channel, Time Warner Cable will pay the subscription fees until a deal is reached with the satellite broadcaster. The price for the Dodgers channel is expected to be in the neighborhood of $5 per subscriber each month.
