Apple Advises App Developers Not To Inflate Rankings While Google Wines and Dines

App developers have been warned by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to not over exaggerate their App Store rankings or employ services that do. The company announced to developers last night, “Once you build a great app, you want everyone to know about it. However, when you promote your app, you should avoid using services that advertise or guarantee top placement in App Store charts. Even if you are not personally engaged in manipulating App Store chart rankings or user reviews, employing services that do so on your behalf may result in the loss of your Apple Developer Program membership.”

App Store rankings are based on a secret calculation that is believed to include an app’s download numbers, news coverage, user ratings and whether it has been featured by Apple. Breaking into the Top 25 in Apple’s App Store is a dream for most developers. Those apps usually make more money and help small operations grow.

Some developers hoping to make that break hire third party companies dedicated to improving an apps rank. While most are legitimate, some add fake user reviews to inflate the app’s ranking.

Last year, Apple changed how they calculated rankings and apps in certain categories received more weight, such as social networking apps. Those developers benefitted greatly by this. Less fortunate developers started relying on companies like Flurry or TapJoy to lift their rankings, hence the new warnings by Apple.

Google is Busy Courting Developers

On the other hand, yesterday Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) launched a Google+ page just for software developers in an effort to woo them into creating more apps for its platform.

“Office hour hangouts” from 11:30 a.m-12:15 p.m. PST every Wednesday will be a time when community members can share information and ideas, according to a blog post written by Chris Chabot, Google+ Developer Relations team lead.

This step signifies Google’s intention to increase the number of third-party apps for Google+. Thus far, there hasn’t been any synergy with Twitter or Facebook, but Google has documented some APIs for developers to use badges in Google+.
