Apple iPad Flat Panel Shipments Jump 35%

Market research firm DisplaySearch estimates that 2012 could see more than 65 million 9.7-inch flat panels for Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPads shipped compared to 48 million units shipped in 2011.

In a Chinese-language press release, DisplaySearch said the 2011 shipments of 9.7-inch panels were XGA (1024 by 769 pixels) panels, supporting IPS or FFS technologies, with 54 percent of total shipments coming from LG Display (NYSE:LPL), 40 percent from Samsung Electronics and the remaining 6 percent from Chimei Innolux.

Shipments of 9.7-inch iPad panels in 2012, however, will come in QXGA (2048 by 1,536 pixels) and XGA standards, with more QXGA panels likely to ship than XGA models. DisplaySearch added that LG Display, Samsung and Sharp will be the primary suppliers for high-resolution displays.
