Apple Precedent Would Signal Attack on Cable Providers

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) could usher in a new era of soccer broadcasting with a radical, multi-billion dollar bid for television rights to the English Premier League.

The Cupertino, Calif. technology company wants sole rights to screen English Premier League games in England when the package for the 2013-2016 seasons is presented. The company is poised to enter a bidding war with heavyweight television players such as ESPN (NYSE:DIS), Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Sports (NASDAQ:NWSA) and Al Jazeera.

Apple already features properties from Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association via its Apple TV platform, a small box that costs under $100 and allows users to stream internet content on their television screens. But this is a whole different ballgame.

By trying to get full television rights to the EPL in England, one of the world’s most profitable sports products, Apple could be marking the beginning of an attack on cable’s domain.
