AT&T Takes out the King Internet Service Provider

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) sat at the top of the U.S. business Internet service provider market (NYSE:ISP) in September, surpassing Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ), according to researcher comScore.

AT&T’s September market share, which was determined by browser-based Internet page views, sat at 20 percent, followed by Verizon’s 12 percent. CenturyLink Inc. (NYSE:CTL), which had merged with Qwest Communications International, rounded out the top three with a 7 percent share.

Three companies shared 5 percent September market shares: tw telecom Inc.(NASDAQ:TWTC), Level 3 Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:LVLT) and Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ:CMCSA).

Greg Mishkin, comScore’s (NASDAQ:SCOR) vice president of telecom and wireless, explained that said although the U.S. business ISP market is led by a only a few top providers, it still represents a more competitive market than the residential ISP market.

While the top five ISPs represented almost 70 percent of September’s traffic in the big business segment, this traffic is lower as compared to midsized (56 percent) and small-business segments (40 percent).

For the small business segment, approximately 40 percent of traffic comes from ISPs smaller than the top 10.
