Attack on Mac! Kraft Recalls Velveeta Cheesy Skillets Singles

The Associated Press had some sobering news to share Monday, when the news service reported that Kraft (NASDAQ:KRFT) has been forced to recall some of its Velveeta pasta and ground beef products on account of some labels leaving off soy from the ingredient lists. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service called on manufacturer Truitt Brothers to recall 1.77 million pounds of Kraft Velveeta Cheesy Skillets Singles – Ultimate Cheeseburger Mac after the agency recognized that some of the products’ labels do not mention the presence of hydrolyzed soy protein and dried soy sauce, both of which are allergens.

The AP reports that the affected products have expiration dates of March 2 to October 23, 2014, and were sent to Kraft Foods distribution centers and retailers worldwide between May 2013 and January. Kraft Foods spokeswoman Joyce Hodel said to CNN on Monday: “The inaccurate labeling is the only thing wrong with the product. If an individual has no allergies or sensitivities to soy, then the product is perfectly safe to consume.”

Other popular Kraft products still line the shelves, but at a time when these convenient cheesy products are at a premium, the company is now feeling the pressure to replace its popular items sooner rather than later.

The most recent recall is now the second hiccup the Deerfield, Illinois-based company has encountered this month. Just a few weeks earlier, Kraft announced a shortage of its beloved Velveeta cheese product and warned that the Velveeta cheese deficit could remain unsettled until after the Super Bowl and 2014 Winter Olympics. A Kraft representative said in an email to Ad Age earlier in January: “Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks. Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue.”

Those comments didn’t quiet the Velveeta faithful, though, and many consumers took to social media following the announcement to voice their concern. They complained about the announced shortage with the hashtag “cheesepocalypse”; as Super Bowl XLVIII nears, there is a real possibility that Kraft will suffer from its inability to meet heightened demand during this crucial period of the year.
