Beer Drinkers Threw Back More Brews in 2011

In new findings reported by the appropriately named Beer Institute, beer sales rose 2 percent in 2011 compared to the previous year. Total beer revenues were $98 billion last year, as beer remained the alcoholic beverage of choice for most Americans.

Citing data from Nielsen, gains came mostly from increased revenues on high-end beers, such as premium and craft brews and imported drafts. Sales of beers in this category were up by almost 3 percent. On-premise retail sales were also up by more than 3 percent to $55 billion; off retail sales were up $43 billion.

According to the Beer Institute President Joe McClain, the jobs of over 900,000 Americans working in supermarkets, restaurants, bars, and stadiums are supported by beer sales. According to a recent study, the beer industry supports, both directly and indirectly 1.8 million American jobs. employed in jobs that are supported by beer sales, which in turn supports, directly and indirectly 1.8 million jobs, including those at the roughly 547,000 beer-selling retail locations in the United States.
