Big Developments with Tech Manufacturers Will Affect These Stocks

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (NYSE:TSM): Foundries TSM and UMC are reported to be among those interested in buying plants put up for sale by Asian DRAM manufacturers Powerchip and ProMOS in response to weak demand and falling prices. DRAM spot prices bolster production cuts for now, but there’s no telling how long this will last since PC DRAM use trends are flaccid.

TSM shares recently traded at $12.05, down $0.15, or 1.23%. Its market capitalization is $62.43 billion. They have traded in a 52-week range of $10.71 to $14.05. Volume today was 4,280,541 shares versus a 3-month average volume of 12,947,800 shares. The company’s trailing P/E is 13.24, while trailing earnings are $0.91 per share.

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC): According to a leaked e-mail, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) may stop netbook production in Q1 2012 to focus on making “ultraportables” and ultrabooks. Acer (ASIYF.PK) has suffered from a sluggish demand for netbooks, which has also resulted in falling sales of Intel’s (NASDAQ:INTC) Atom processors.

Also, the eagerly-awaited debut of Intel’s (NASDAQ:INTC) “Romley” Xeon server chips will be delayed until March due to difficulties related to pairing the chips with serial-attached SCSI (SAS) hard drives, says DigiTimes. The extended wait may boost the standing of AMD’s (NYSE:AMD) “Bulldozer” Opteron server chips, while creating problems for analog chipmakers IPHI and VLTR.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL): About 1,000 workers are striking to protest long working hours at a Chinese plant owned by Taiwan’s Jingyuan Computer, which supplies components for Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and IBM (NYSE:IBM). Labor turmoil and climbing wages are serious worries for Western electronics makers who rely on Chinese manufacturing – last year’s series of suicides at a Foxconn facility was a public relations debacle for Apple.

AAPL shares recently traded at $364.48, down $2.51, or 0.68%. Its market capitalization is $338.75 billion. They have traded in a 52-week range of $310.50 to $426.70. Volume today was 6,422,506 shares versus a 3-month average volume of 19,882,100 shares. The company’s trailing P/E is 13.17, while trailing earnings are $27.68 per share.
