Chitika Study: iOS Web Traffic Tops Mac OS X?
Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS Web traffic outpaced that of Mac OS X this month for the first time ever. Or maybe not.
CNET reported Friday that a study made by Chitika Insights across its online advertising network from August 2011 to February 2012 showed that iOS climbed to 8.15 percent this month and Mac OS X fell to 7.96 percent.
However, the report points out that Chitika only looked at traffic across the Chitika Ad Network of more than 100,000 Web sites, ignoring the millions of sites that don’t use its service. A broader study across different networks may have yielded different results.
Still, the findings are of interest. According to Chitika, iOS market share has increased by almost 50 percent in the past six months, while Mac OS X’s market share is down by nearly 25 percent, said CNET.
“The mobile device industry is growing so fast, that it will likely become the predominant method for consumers to access and interact with the web in the near future,” Chitika said in a statement. “This poses the questions: When will we see mobile traffic overtake traditional desktop traffic, and what does this mean for the computing industry?”
It would have been really interesting to see how Android’s traffic compared with that of iOS and Mac OS X, but Chitika didn’t provide that data. The advertising network reported that in December Android made up 51.6 percent of all mobile traffic across its network, with Apple’s iOS claiming a 46.5 percent share. However, one month before, iOS led with 51.7 percent of the market, while Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android trailed with 46.1 percent. If that data reveals a developing pattern, Android might have been the real winner this month.
