Tech employees – with their high salaries, free lunches, and generous stock options – seem like they should be the happiest employees in America. But if you want to find an office where workers are really smiling, look to the pharmaceutical industry. Two big pharma companies have the happiest employees in the United States, according to the results of CareerBliss’s 50 Happiest Companies in America 2017 survey.
Unlike past years, when tech and entertainment companies like Google, Apple, and Disney have topped the list, 2017’s happiest companies are big names in industries traditionally seen as stodgy. In addition to pharma, companies in the real estate, financial services, and energy industries dominated the top spots on the list.
“When most folks think of modern workplace happiness, they think of tech with unique office environments and casual dress codes with a long list of applicants eager to be a part of their fun and unique culture,” Heidi Golledge, chief happiness officer and cofounder of CareerBliss, said.
“However, in recent years a number of pharmaceutical and financial companies have gained momentum in creating happy work places for their employees,” Golledge continued. “Factors such as career development programs and the opportunity for growth are propelling these companies forward, surpassing even Google and Disney in our CareerBliss happiness rankings.”
In fact, Google didn’t even crack the top 50 on CareerBliss’s ranking. Apple and Microsoft, the biggest tech companies on the list, were ranked 31st and 36th, respectively. Does that mean Silicon Valley is losing its luster? Not necessarily. The ranking is based on voluntarily submitted user reviews; workers at a certain company might love their job, but if they don’t review their employer, it doesn’t count in the rankings.
To develop the list, CareerBliss analyzed more the 22,000 employee-submitted company reviews. Reviews rated companies on factors such as the employee’s relationship with management and the CEO, salary, work environment, advancement opportunities, job satisfaction, and overall workplace setting. Every review received a score on a scale from 1 to 5, and results were averaged to generate a “BlissScore” for each company.
