Consumer Biz Recap: Wal-Mart & Other Discount Stores Could See Lower Holiday Sales
Compared to last year, fewer consumers intend to spend less this year than they did during the 2011 holiday shopping season, according to a survey from NPD Group. The 2012 national election and the media full of ads related to it are counted as distractions that might delay the season, however. Also this year, a somewhat lower percentage of consumers responded that they will shop such discount stores as Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT), Target (NYSE:TGT), and Kmart (NASDAQ:SHLD), which just might imply boosts to off-price retailers like TJMaxx (NYSE:TJX), and Ross Stores (NASDAQ:ROST).
