DirecTV and Time Warner Cable Tag Team the FCC

DirecTV (NASDAQ:DTV) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE:TWC) are teaming up and looking for the FCC to change the rules for retransmitting broadcast TV channels.

The Time Warner Cable VP of regulatory affairs says, “We explained that the retransmission consent fees demanded by broadcast stations continue to skyrocket and that the outdated regulatory regime, which prevents true marketplace negotiations, results in harm to consumers.”

Under the current scheme, companies like News Corp. (NASDAQ:NWSA), Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS), and their Fox and ABC stations can charge substantial retransmission fees.

DirecTV’s (NASDAQ:DTV) stock is up 3.22% to $42.34 on the news. Shares are up 6.04% year to date. The stock has traded in a 52-week range between $39.12 and $53.40.

Time Warner Cable’s (NYSE:TWX) stock is up 1.72% to $64.97 on the news. Shares are down 1.61% year to date. The stock has traded in a 52-week range between $50.36 and $80.86.
