Disney to Re-Release Four Animated Films in 3-D

After Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) re-release of The Lion King in 3-D, the company has decided to re-release four more classic animated films in 3-D.

The first of the four, Beauty and the Beast, will be released in theaters on January 13, 2012. Disney/Pixar’s Finding Nemo will return for a limited engagement on September 14, 2012, followed by Disney/Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. on January 18, 2013. Finally, The Little Mermaid will be released for the first time in 3-D on September 13, 2013.

“Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of both,” said Alan Bergman, president of Walt Disney Studios. “We’re thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3-D – and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen.”

As of last week, The Lion King 3-D has grossed over $80 million.
