Early years and rise to fame
Blunt made her film debut in the 2003 film Warrior Queen. From there, she moved on to the 2003 TV movie Henry VIII. After a few more television roles, she got her big break in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada. Other movies followed, including Looper (2012), Into the Woods (2014), Sicario (2015), The Girl on the Train (2016), A Quiet Place (2018), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018).
During an interview with Seth Meyers, Blunt revealed how she met her husband, John Krasinski. According to Blunt, she and a mutual friend were having dinner when her friend saw Krasinski at the same restaurant. “My friend goes, ‘Oh my God, there’s my friend John.” Krasinski was having dinner with Justin Theroux but decided to stop by their table. “He abandoned Justin and came over to talk to us. He did not eat. He just stood there and made me laugh,” Blunt told Meyers. When Meyers asked if she knew right away Krasinski was the one for her during their first meeting, and she replied, “I kind of did.”
Emily Blunt’s struggle with stuttering
Blunt told InStyle magazine she was bullied as a child because she stuttered. One problem she encountered at times was saying her name. “I got teased a lot, and to this day, I hate unkindness in people and bullies,” she told InStyle.
Blunt says even as an adult, she sometimes has trouble speaking clearly when she’s under stress. “Names are always tricky because you can’t substitute a different word and there’s so much pressure attached to it. Even nowadays, when I’m tired or I feel put on the spot, I still sometimes struggle to get the words out. When I make a phone call—especially if I’m calling someone I don’t know—I have to mentally prepare myself. There’s always a big pause between when they ask, ‘Who’s calling?’ and when I say ‘Emily Blunt.’”
A blessing in disguise
Although Blunt was teased for stuttering, it helped her find a career she was passionate about. Blunt says she doesn’t have trouble with stuttering when she acts. She says she believes performing in school plays helped her overcome her speech disorder. The actress is now an advocate for the American Institute for Stuttering.
“If you speak to any actor, they will tell you that they never stutter when they act. Acting is a way of removing yourself from yourself,” she told InStyle.
