Gartner: Processor Vendors Outpaced Semiconductor Growth in 2011

Although the chips are down this year, processor vendors make up for the high inventory concerns by carrying the load of the industry’s value. According to tech research company Gartner, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD), and Nividia (NASDAQ:NVDA) showed more growth in 2011 than forecasted (not difficult considering a puny projection of  0.9% gain for chip sales at-large). The world’s leading semiconductor (NYSE:SMH) IP supplier ARM Holdings (NASDAQ:ARMH) is also expected to outgrow the industry with a projected growth of 20.6%.

“The industry did well in the early part of the year, in many cases entering the year with backlog from an exuberant 2010,” said Stephan Ohr, Semiconductor Research Director at Gartner. “But uncertainty about the state of the macroeconomy set in at the midpoint of the year. Consumers held off purchases, and infrastructure expansion plans languished as governments resisted assuming more debt. Equipment inventories began to build as the year progressed, with resulting ripples throughout the semiconductor industry.”
