Google Inc’s YouTube Ready to Compete for Internet TV Market Growth

YouTube (NASDAQ:GOOG) is putting big money on original content. During his keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show on Thursday, YouTube’s vice president of content Robert Kyncl predicted that 75 percent of all media channels will be born and transmitted via the Internet. Online video is viewed on tablets and smartphones — not computers — and from platforms other than YouTube.

Google TV (NASDAQ:GOOG) now seems to make sense. In March 2011, Google acquired Web video production company Next New Networks, which develops professionally produced content. Google’s approach to acquisitions and Internet TV now makes sense, too. Kyncl showed clips of programs that we can expect to see on the video site in the future.

Within a few years, Kyncl said, online video will be accountable for 90 percent of all online traffic — not just mobile for devices, but across smart TV. By 2015, around 500 million smart TVs will ship, and about 700 million mobile devices will be activitated by the end of 2012. According to Kyncl, more Android are activated daily than babies are born worldwide.
