Google Working on Voice Control Competition for Siri

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) may be unveiling a match to Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Siri voice control.  The Siri voice control system is a ‘digital personal assistant’ that lets you talk to your phone just as you would a person. Google this week also announced they acquired the company Clever Sense, which offers a voice control app.

Google’s new voice system will be named Majel. The name comes from Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the actor who played the voice of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek.

The Android and Me blog says, “I say this year because I’ve heard that engineers at Google X are working around the clock on finishing the first release and the NY Times previously reported that one product would be released by Google X this year.”  Google X is a lab owned by Google, where engineers go crazy with ideas and dream up anything.

“A January or February release might be more realistic,’ said Android and Me. “Other more advanced features like controlling phone actions and applications with natural language commands are expected to come later.”

In an interview, Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Matias Duarte said, “Our approach is more like Star Trek, the Starship Enterprise — everything is voice-aware. It’s not that there’s a personality, it doesn’t have a name, it’s just Computer.”
