With its launch on Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, its $1 billion sale to Facebook, and a bastion of new users, Instagram is without a doubt the darling of the social media scene right now.
Since its launch on Android 10 days ago, Instagram has gained over 1,000,000 users a day, jumping from 30 million to 40 million account holders. While that number only represents about 5 percent of Facebook’s total users, those tracking Instagram’s growth say that the company is poised to hit 100 million users in a shorter time span than its acquirer.
The photo sharing app launched in October 2010 and hit the 1 million user mark by the close of that year. In this month alone, the app has gained 10 million more users. The explosive growth is partially due to buzz around the company’s sale to Facebook, but many believe that it is more reflective of the company finally tapping into the Android user base which includes over 500 million people.
