Here’s How Ford Justifies Its New $100,000 Truck

$100,000: It’s the amount of money the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees for. It’s a sum big enough to name a candy bar after and enough to buy a house in some places. And as of 2018, it’s also the cost of a new truck at your local Ford dealership.

Introduced at the Texas State Fair (a growing tradition among truck manufacturers), Ford is launching the Super Duty Limited trim line for 2018 models. After making news by launching the $70,000 F-150 Limited back in 2016, the company is upping the ante even more. The F-250 Super Duty Limited starts at $80,835. The next-level F-350 Super Duty Limited starts at $82,010. And at the top of the range is the F-450 Super Duty Limited, which starts at $87,100 and tops out at $94,445. After the destination fee, registration, taxes, and (probably) a dealer markup, you’re likely out the door with a $100,000 Ford truck.

Sound crazy? Here’s why Ford thinks the F-450 Super Duty Limited is worth the money.

1. It’s as plush as a Mercedes inside

At first glance, the interior has a passing resemblance to the $65,835 base F-450. But looks can be deceiving. In the Super Duty Limited, passengers are treated to heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats trimmed in two-tone leather and heated thrones in the rear. There’s also a hand-stitched leather steering wheel, suede headliner, panoramic moonroof, and hand-finished ash wood trim.

2. It has the tech to match

For a tough-as-nails heavy-duty truck, Ford has thrown every safety feature it has into the Super Duty Limited to make its occupants even safer. The nearly 20-foot long truck has features, including a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, adaptive steering, trailer reverse guide, lane-keep alert, forward collision warning, and quad-beam LED headlights. These should all help to make the big truck less of a handful to drive.

3. It’s special on the outside, too

We already thought Ford’s heavy-duty trucks looked good, but the handsome Super Duty Limited is a standout. To separate it from the pack, the new truck has a unique “satin chrome” grille up front. There are power running boards that drop down when the doors open to make entry and exit easier, too. Out back, unique tailgate trim lets people know what just passed them.

4. It can seriously haul

Despite the tech and high-class interior, Ford has sacrificed none of the Super Duty Limited’s capability. Power comes from Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, which is good for 440 horsepower and a whopping 925 pound-feet of torque. With its “dually” rear axle, the truck can tow over 30,000 pounds.

5. There’s a market for it

After offering increasingly upscale options packages for the F-Series over the years, Ford realized introducing a true luxury truck wasn’t really a gamble anymore. According to the automaker, over half of all Super Duty trucks it sells are optioned with at least one luxury package. That’s what’s really been pushing the top end of truck prices higher. Don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

6. It’s groundbreaking

Whether you’re a Ford, Chevy, or Mopar person, the fact is the Blue Oval is the one setting the pace in the truck market right now. Whether it’s a jump to an aluminum-intensive construction or a six-figure truck, you can be sure its rivals are watching, and they’ll follow suit very soon. Both Chevy and Ram offer high-end luxury trucks but not on this level yet. Until they do, Ford might pick off some buyers who want the best the truck world has to offer.

7. It wants to get a jump on the new year

Ford’s F-Series has been America’s best-selling vehicle since 1982, and it doesn’t want that to change anytime soon. The Super Duty Limited is expected to arrive at dealerships in the winter, hopefully to offset the traditionally slow sales of the colder months. Even if some buyers can’t afford one, they could be enough of a draw to get them into a more affordable F-Series truck. Either way, it’s a win for Ford.

8. It won’t affect the F-Series’ affordability

Sometimes when a more expensive model is introduced, it drags the whole lineup up with it, placing it out of reach for the average customer. That isn’t the case with the Super Duty Limited. Even with a comprehensive refresh for 2018, the F-150 starts at $28,675. The rest of the truck lineup stays closer to earth as well.
