Here’s How Retailers are Doing Ahead of the Holiday Season

U.S. retailers (NYSE:XRT) reported disappointing October sales, increasing the stakes as they head into the crucial holiday selling season.

Retailers serving higher end and discount shoppers continue to outperform those squeezed in the middle. Estee Lauder (NYSE:EL) maker of its namesake skincare line and M.A.C. cosmetics, raised its full-year outlook after reporting better-than-expected quarterly results and shares surged 16%. Dillard’s Inc. (NYSE:DDS) also saw its sales rise 8%, beating the 3.7% estimate. Macy’s (NYSE:M) said monthly sales rose 2.2%, but missed the 3.6% estimate from analysts. Its rival Nordstrom (NYSE:JWN) also reported a smaller-than-expected 5.4% increase in sales.

Not only did Macy’s, and Nordstrom’s sales rise less-than-expected but Saks Inc. (NYSE:SKS)sales rose 1.8%, which the company blamed on its decision to exclude cosmetics and fragrance from its friends and family event. Kohl’s Corp. (NYSE:KSS) sales rose 3.9%, helped by its new Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony collections and it’s rival J.C. Penney Co. (NYSE:JCP) sales fell behind rising at an unexpected 2.6% . Regional department-store chain Stage Stores Inc. forecast a bigger-than-expected loss after a sales miss.

“Europe’s debt crisis also pressured demand. While teen retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (NYSE:ANF) posted a 7% increase in third-quarter same-store sales, sales at its European stores slowed,” according to MarketWatch.
