IBM: Cyber Monday Soared With Record-Breaking Sales

Cyber Monday follows in the footsteps of Black Friday with record-breaking sales. According to IBM (NYSE:IBM), Cyber Monday sales for online retailers (NYSEARCA:XRT) were up 33% from 2010, which was a record-setting year in and of itself. IBM also found that sales per person were up 2.6% to an average of $198.26. Shopping reached its peak at 11:05 am PST/ 2:05pm EST and escalated again during the evening hours.

A growing number of consumers are using their mobile devices to make holiday purchases. One in 10 consumers used mobile devices to visit retailer websites and 6.6% of purchases were made through mobile means, an almost 300% increase from 2010. Mobile traffic was actually higher on Black Friday, when consumers were presumably comparison shopping, but total mobile purchases were 29.3% higher on Cyber Monday.

Advertising on social media websites also benefited retailers as 0.56% of Cyber Monday traffic was referred from social media sites and 0.53% on Black Friday. Of the social media referrals, Facebook accounted for 86%.
