Intel Buys ‘Kno’ to Reinforce Education Laptops Sideline and 2 Other Hot Stocks to Watch

Late on Friday, Intel disclosed that it is acquiring Kno and hiring its 95 employees, marking its most recent venture in reinforcing its sideline of designs for education-oriented laptops and a tablet meant for classrooms. Kno started out in 2009 and first exhibited its hardware at a 2010 All Things D conference. The device contained a bigger screen than the iPad and its debut featured an option for a dual-screen configuration that would be hand-held vertically. Financials of the transaction were not divulged.
ViroPharma Inc. (NASDAQ:VPHM): Current price $49.42
Shire is purchasing ViroPharma at $4.2 billion to strengthen its portfolio of lucrative drugs used to treat rare diseases, as they attract growing attention from drugs firms. According to reports, a number of companies including Sanofi were interested in ViroPharma, which manufactures Cinryze for the treatment of immune disorder hereditary angioedema. Shire said on Monday it will pay $50 per share in cash for ViroPharma, representing a 27-percent premium to Friday’s close. ViroPharms shares are up more than 25 percent Monday in very heavy trading.
Zalicus Inc. (NASDAQ:ZLCS): Current price $1.36
Zalicus shares have plunged by more than 70 percent Monday, after the firm said that it would cease developing an experimental pain drug which failed to show a benefit versus placebo in two mid-stage trials. The drug, Z160, was being developed for treating chronic pain. Zalicus said it now intends to center on another pain drug, Z944. The firm’s shares had been halted in pre-market trading.
