Intel Ready to Flank Apple with Microsoft Devices

For Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) and PC lovers, the highlight of the Consumer Electronics Show is the horde of new Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows 7 ultrabooks hitting the market. Internally, however, Intel is hoping that Windows 8 will help the company catch up with Apple’s mobile devices, especially the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad.

In November, an analyst at a Credit Suisse Technology Conference questioned Intel’s approach and reminded Intel CEO Paul Otellini of how crucial ultramobile devices are by asking Otellini, “But how many people in this room have iPads?” It’s a no-brainer how that turned out.

According to Otellini, there are more than 6 million apps available for x86, overshadowing all other platforms. This is all, of course, in contrast to Windows 8 on ARM (NASDAQ:ARMH): mainstream Windows will run for the first time on both Intel’s x86 and devices with ARM chips from companies like Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) and Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA).
