Is Costco Open on Thanksgiving? What You Need to Know
It happens to the best of us. You think you have everything you need for a perfect Thanksgiving dinner, only discover that you’re out of one or two essential items. While some grocery stores open their doors on Thanksgiving for exactly this kind of emergency, including Kroger, Ralphs, Whole Foods, and Winn-Dixie, you’re out of luck if you’re hoping to shop at Costco.
Costco is closed on Thanksgiving
Every one of Costco’s more than 500 U.S. warehouse stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. It’s one of seven paid holidays for Costco employees. (The others are New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Christmas.)
According to Costco, shutting down on the holiday is simply the right thing to do. “Our employees work especially hard during the holiday season and we simply believe that they deserve the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their families. Nothing more complicated than that,” a Costco spokesperson told ThinkProgress in 2014.
Costco’s warehouse club rival Sam’s Club also closes on Thanksgiving.
What to buy for your Costco Thanksgiving
If you want to stock up on Turkey Day supplies at Costco, you’ll need to get your shopping done before 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. That’s when most Costco stores will close their doors. They’ll reopen again at 9 a.m. on Black Friday.
Costco should have almost everything you need for your holiday meal, especially if you’re feeding a crowd. The famous pumpkin pie is huge and costs just $5.99. It’s so popular they bake 6 million of them every year, according to the Kitchn. Whole fresh turkeys are between $0.99 for a regular Butterball turkey and $2.99 a pound for a Butterball organic turkey, according to Eat Like No One Else, though prices and selection may vary at your local store.
You can also pick up prepared mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, and massive bags of Brussels sprouts, fresh cranberries, and more. Of course, there are also jumbo packs of napkins, paper plates, and cups to make clean up easy, plus storage containers for all those leftovers.
And if you like to imbibe, Costco is a good place to stock up on wine, beer, and liquor. The Kirkland-branded beverages are both affordable and pretty good – it’s even rumored that the vodka is made by the same people who make Grey Goose. Or you can fill your liquor cabinet with bargain-priced name brands. Check out the Costco Wine Blog for suggestions on what to serve with your Thanksgiving meal.
Costco’s holiday hours 2018
Most Costco stores are open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. But those hours get a slight adjustment around the holidays.
Starting November 3 and through December 23, Costco stores stay open an extra hour on Saturdays, closing at 7 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. On Black Friday, stores open an hour early at 9 a.m.
On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, Costco opens early at 9 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m.
