Is it an Upstream Battle for Spotify? Many Artists Say Streaming Hurts Sales

You will not find many new albums on streaming services like Spotify, Rhapsody, MOG and Rdio. That’s because many artists feel like these cut into album sales. The Black Keys will not release their new album, “El Camino” on streaming; neither will other artists like Coldplay and Mac Miller.

These streaming companies believe, however, that the record sales are actually boosted after their customers purchase new music after finding it through streaming. Spotify, one of the largest streaming services, says that artists and publishers have made substantial money from their service, $150 million in its three years in business. Some calculations by the industry show that a song must be streamed a 100 times or more to make as much money as the sale of one download.
