Is Your Best Buy Big Box Closing Its Doors for Good?

Over the weekend, Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) revealed the locations of the 50 stores the ailing electronics retailer will close this year. The list (see below) includes seven stores in California, six in Illinois, and six in the company’s home state of Minnesota.

Best Buy announced last month that it would close some of its stores, eliminate 400 corporate jobs, and cut $800 million in costs. The company has about 1,400 locations in the United States. It has already closed two stores this year, one in Missouri and one in Arizona. Most of the remaining stores are set to shut their doors on May 12, with the rest to follow suit this summer. The company has plans to open 100 smaller Best Buy Mobile stores.

In the last few years, pressure from the economy and competitors and a significant shift in how Americans shop have caused problems for Best Buy, the largest consumer electronics retailer in the U.S. The company has been facing dwindling sales of big-ticket items and increased competition from online retailers like Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) and discount stores like Target (NYSE:TGT). Rival Circuit City went out of business in 2009. Restructuring costs contributed to the company’s loss of $1.7 billion in the last quarter.

Most recently, the company has also had to deal with the loss of its chief executive officer, Brian Dunn, who resigned last week after the board of directors initiated an investigation into Dunn’s personal conduct. The company has reportedly formed a committee to search for a new chief executive.
