Macy’s Fires Back at Target

Macy’s Inc (NYSE:M) is the second major retailer to open its stores at midnight on ‘Black Friday’.

According to Macy’s, more than 800 of its stores would open sharp at midnight on the day after Thanksgiving to meet customer demand. ‘Black Friday’ shoppers normally seek holiday deals. Competitor Target (NYSE:TGT) also announced last week that it would allow holiday shopping from midnight that day.

Target (NYSE:TGT) is among many retailers (NYSE:XRT) who are pushing the limit of “Black Friday.” Sears (NASDAQ:SHLD) and Kmart opened for Thanksgiving Day for the first time last year, while Gap (NYSE:GPS), Old Navy, and Banana Republic have been opening on turkey day since 2009. Toys R Us will open at 10pm on Thanksgiving. Last year almost all of Wal-mart’s (NYSE:WMT) non-24 hour stores were open by midnight on Thanksgiving evening.

Though retailers have been going through a difficult time during the uncertain economic climate, Macy’s has done better. Second quarter earnings were up 64% on drives to make its stores more attractive.
