Microsoft Complains to EU About Google

According to people familiar with the matter, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and a few others have lodged a complaint with the EU’s competition regulators regarding Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) social networking tool Google+. As the complaint was made by these companies informally, the sources did not reveal more details of the nature of the complaint.

Both the European Commission and Microsoft declined to offer comment.

The complaint may lead the EU to expand the scope of its current investigation into Google. This may follow the action of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which is also investigating Google search activities and included Google+ in its ambit last month.

The action by Microsoft shows the increasing rivalry between majors in the tech space. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Microsoft have earlier asked the EU to look into a patent dispute involving Motorola Mobility (NYSE:MMI), which is allegedly demanding excessive licensing charges. Motorola Mobility is in the process of being acquired by Google.
