Mobilewalla Ranks Top Apps for 2011
Mobilewalla has ranked the top apps for 2011 by user rating and operating system (OS). While apps are rated in most app stores, Mobilewalla devised its own rating system that Sarah Perez of Techcrunch describes by saying, “Instead of looking at raw user ratings, this scoring system is an algorithm that analyzes a variety of factors in addition to ratings, including an app’s position within its own category, volume, social media sentiment and more.” Sounds complicated, but basically each app ended up with a score from 0-100 with higher being better.
Pixlr-o-matic, a retro picture editing app, claimed the top prize for free Android apps (NASDAQ:GOOG) while Madden NFL was number one among paid apps. MLB.com at Bat Lite was Mobilewalla’s number one free iOS app and Angry Birds Rio was the best paid.
Memory Booster Pro, an app that recovers lost or used up memory to speed up applications, and Sea Storm Animated Theme 2.0 (paid) were tops on the Blackberry (NASDAQ:RIMM). And finally, TuneIn Radio, a radio station streamer, and Phone 8 (paid), which provides themes for the Windows Phone homescreen, were the best of Windows phone apps.
Photo editing apps seemed to be big hits overall in the rankings as were iPhone (NASDAQ:AAPL) mimicking apps which recreate iPhone capabilities on competitor devices. The Huffington Post’s Jason Gilbert also noted that gamers gave top marks to “send an animal flying using slopes and hills” type apps on three separate operating systems. The lists also seemed to indicate that Blackberry users are a drag, ranking a wallpaper app number one and being the only device that doesn’t have any games among its top applications.
