Myth Debunked: BlackBerry Users Are All About Apps
At today’s DevCon Europe event hosted by Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM), the castrated telecomm company debunked the myth that BlackBerry users aren’t into apps.
Alec Saunders, head of RIM’s developer relations says quite the opposite is true, offering this stat: 6 million apps are downloaded from BlackBerry’s App World each day, or nearly 150 million a month. Saunders also says BlackBerry beats out Android in downloaded paid apps, generating 40 percent more revenue, and that BlackBerry app developers are making more money than developers for Android (NASDAQ:GOOG) or iOS (NASDAQ:AAPL).
Saunders, who came on board through the QNX acquisition, used this week’s DevCon event to get this message out and get developers on board in an effort to turn things around for RIM. Saunders remains enthusiastic, but realistic, aware that BlackBerry’s app library has some growing to do in order to compete with iOS and Android.
One of RIM’s goals at DevCon is to get developers comfortable with the concept of working on a platform that won’t be coming out until the second half of the year. RIM plans to use HTML 5 as a bridge for developers looking to make apps for BlackBerrys today that can also run on its next-generation devices. Currently, a fourth of all apps on BlackBerry App World are using HTML 5.
RIM is also walking developers through the motions of changing Android apps to ones compatible with the PlayBook. This takes relatively little time, according to company representatives.
