Nokia Scores Patent Victory Against HTC and 2 Other Hot Stocks to Watch
Nokia Corp. (NYSE:NOK): Current price $7.57
Nokia on Wednesday triumphed again in its patent battle against HTC Corp. — a U.K. court decided in Nokia’s favor regarding mobile telecoms tech. After hearing the case in the Patents Court in London, the judge ruled that HTC had infringed on a European patent held by Nokia entitled “Modulator structure for a transmitter and a mobile station,” according to court documents. This decision comes while Nokia tries to take better advantage of its array of tech patents, which it will keep after the sale of its handset unit to Microsoft is completed.
Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:ABX): Current price $19.58
Barrick Gold’s decision to suspend the building of its Pascua-Lama project took up most of the discussion during its conference call after posting its third-quarter earnings earlier on Thursday. The highly controversial, mega gold-silver project on the border of Argentina and Chile struck the bottom in second-quarter figures with a $5.1 billion write-down. Barrick Gold CEO Jamie Sokalsky said that the move to suspend construction and continue with a phased strategy is best for the firm.
Alpha Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE:ANR): Current price $7.17
Alpha Natural Resources has joined competitor Arch Coal Inc. in projecting lower mining costs for 2013 as it pulls back spending to deal with weak coal prices. Shares are up more than 4.5 percent on Thursday after the firm reported a smaller-than-anticipated quarterly loss and lowered its capital budget for 2013. Thermal coal prices have dropped while power producers transition to natural gas, and excess supply and weak demand from China has cut into the prices of steel-making coal.
