Priceline Helps Online Travel Stocks Take Off

Online travel site Priceline.com (NASDAQ:PCLN) reported excellent results for the third quarter. Earnings more than doubled over last year with the help of a 79% increase in overseas revenues.

Sales were $1.45 billion compared to $1 billion a year ago. Analysts were expecting sales of $1.42 billion. Net income came in at $496.5 million ($9.17 a share) compared to $223 million ($4.41 a share) last year. International bookings were almost $5 billion, up 73%. Hotel bookings were up 47.4% over the previous year.

The company’s guidance for the fourth quarter is to attain earnings per share between $4.90 and $5.00. The company qualified this expectation by saying the potential sovereign defaults in Europe “may subject operating results to greater variability in the future.”
