Research in Motion: Sliding Toward Extinction?

Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) is taking big charges from price markdowns on its Playbook tablet and a disastrous network outage last month.

The smartphone maker announced it would fall short of its full year forecast of earnings per share between $5.25 and $6.00 a share. RIMM is taking a provision of $360 million for the Playbook write-down and another $50 million charge relating to the global network outage. Earnings per share for the third quarter (excluding the write downs) are expected to be $1.20 to $1.40.

The Playbook sold about 150,000 units in the third quarter after heavy discounting. That sales number is chickenfeed compared to Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) sales of 11 million iPads. “RIM is committed to the BlackBerry PlayBook,” Co-Chief Executive Mike Lazaridis said in a statement. “Early results from recent PlayBook promotions indicate a significant increase in demand across most channels.”

In the core smartphone business, RIM faced severe headwinds from the iPhone (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android devices, surrendering significant market share.

The company is expected to announce Q3 results on December 15.
