Samsung Sees Record-Breaking Annual Mobile Phone Sales

Samsung broke its previous annual mobile phone sales record at the end of November, according to a report by Reuters. Samsung Electronics Ltd said in a statement that it had reached 300 million in mobile device sales this year for the first time in the company’s history. Sales are up from 2010 when the retailer sold 280 million units.

The company said that its success was largely due to its Galaxy S and Galaxy S II smartphones. Reuters quoted JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business, who said, “We look forward to extending this success going into 2012.”

Although Nokia’s (NYSE:NOK) sales are expected to be even or possibly less than last year, Samsung will likely finish behind the company, who sold 303.6 million devices in the first three quarters of the year. Samsung has captured the lower end of the smartphone market with their Bada operating system. Bada gives users less speed but also at a lower price tag than other smartphones on the market.
